Morning
we have a Dell MD 3600i SAN attached to which are attached 2 MD1220s.
The MD3600i is the 12 slot version with 1TB Nearline drives 6Gbps @ 7200 RPM ( Constellation ES )
Both the MD1220s are the 24 slot versions and house the 2.5inch 600Gb SAS 6Gbps @ 10K RPM .
The Hot Spare is configured in the 3600i .
As I understood it from the Dell literature the requirement is that the hot spare must be of equal capacity or bigger then the failed drive in order for it to work as a hot spare - I can't find any other requirements.
However the other day when one of the 600Gb drives failed in one of the MD1200s, the Hot Spare failed as well. What I'm trying to figure out is did the hot spare actually fail or was it just unable to act as a hot spare because of another parameter - ie the difference in speed of the drives?
I have replaced both drives and all is back to normal - but I am wondering if it would be better to reconfigure adding another hot spare to protect the faster 600Gb drives?
Many thanks.
